B’shnorkestra is thrilled to announce the release of it’s second album – Global Concertos.
This recording was recorded live on May 9, 2015 by Tom Fallat and Paurl Walsh, mixed by Evan Schiller and mastered by Ed Brooks.
B’shnorkestra was nominated for both Album of the Year (for Global Concertos) and Acoustic Jazz Ensemble in Earshot’s Golden Ear Awards. These awards recognize the accomplishments of Seattle jazz artists over the previous year.

Composer / band leader / trumpeter Samantha Boshnack gained *my* attention for her first release with this 14 piece big band, entitled “Go To Orange”, which came out of nowhere and hugely impressed me with its maturity. Global Concertos Live, is a sprawling map of World musics cohered to meld into nearly avant-garde expositions rooted in firm historical roots. Global Concertos is five Boshnack compositions, each showcasing a guest soloist’s instrument and tradition: Thione Diop – West African talking drum, Christos Govetas – Greek clarinet, Srivani Jade – North Indian vocals, Julio Jauregui – Latin American piano and Thomas Marriott – American jazz trumpet. In Global Concertos each artist brings their individual voice to the B’shnorkestra to create a new “all world” sound.

Alchemy Sound Project’s 2016 release Further Explorations presents innovative compositions and virtuoso performances by five jazz composer-performers, each a highly advanced improviser in their own right. The synergy of this collective, enhanced by two guest performers, produces music that is fascinating, raw and honest.
While the group’s configuration and roots serve as a continuation of the jazz tradition, the members also compose orchestral works, film scores, chamber music and solo pieces for various ensembles and projects across the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia. Music education, support for the arts and expansion of cultural self-awareness and empowerment are important themes for this group.
Alchemy Project composers are Sumi Tonooka (piano), Erica Lindsay (tenor saxophone) Salim Washington (tenor saxophone, flute, alto flute, bass clarinet & oboe), David Arend (acoustic bass) and Samantha Boshnack (trumpet & flugelhorn). In addition to these composers the band features Max Wood (drums) and Willem De Koch (trombone).

The Sam Boshnack Quintet performs The Nellie Bly Project, a suite of original compositions illuminating the daredevil, feminist, journalist and iconoclast Nellie Bly (1864–1922).

Boshnack combines a musical exploration of Bly’s life with propulsion from her words – as spoken and sung elements within the suite.
SBQ will perform The Nellie Bly Project in its entirety, as well as new compositions. Following this special night, SBQ heads into Studio Litho to record The Nellie Bly Project, their second album. The Nellie Bly Project premiered in 2014 with support from 4Culture and Sprout.
Opening is Duende, an energetic new trio featuring longtime collaborators Alex Chadsey (piano/keyboards/compositions), Farko Dosumov (electric bass) and Jeff “Bongo” Busch (drums and percussion). Duende skillfully utilizes the American jazz tradition as a point of departure for daring explorations of rhythms and influences from the Americas, Europe and Africa. With catchy melodies and lush harmonies, it’s got a wholehearted commitment to groove.
Since the arrival of the 21st century, jazz has evolved into a truly cross-generational, multicultural musical art form that is assimilating an unprecedented array of musical styles and techniques. At the same time, the male-dominated paradigm that has defined the historical narrative of jazz is no more. Women are shaking up the music industry while the general public is becoming much more aware of the contributions female musicians have made to jazz. “Freedom of Expression: Interviews With Women in Jazz,” a collection of interviews with 37 female musicians, musicians of all ages, nationalities, and races, and representing nearly every style of jazz one can imagine, provides evidence of this profound evolution. The interviewees speak about their earliest experiences playing music, the years of practice required to become a professional musician, and what jazz means in the new millennium. These interviews will inform and inspire both casual and seasoned fans of this music, as well as young musicians taking their first steps in the journey to master their craft. “At long last, an in-depth recognition of the female contributions to jazz. About the Author
Chris Becker has written about all styles of music for several print and online publications, including Culturemap Houston, Houston Press. All About Jazz, and Sequenza 21. He is also an active composer of music for dance, film, and mixed-media installations.
