An evening of cross-continental contemporary dance – set to high-octane original jazz and part of the UW Dance Program’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
As part of the University of Washington Dance Program’s 50th Anniversary, encore performance by KSD with the Sam Boshnack Quintet features works by celebrated UW dance artists. From Seattle to Switzerland, artists Karin Stevens (1999 Alum), Penny Hutchinson (Adjunct Faculty and Teaching Artist) and Jürg Koch (Professor 2004-2014) showcase their individual choreographic styles with 5 works set to live original jazz music.
Moved by the recent work of prolific Seattle trumpeter and composer Samantha Boshnack and a desire to build community and expand KSD’s reach, Karin brings together an artistic team of UW alumni, alumni faculty, and 10 new dancers. Back by demand, the four returning works and one new work pull inspiration from man-made and natural powerful local structures like the 99 Viaduct and Puget Sound, lively Juba music, intimate relationships and idiosyncrasies that occur inside of ensemble.
Karin’s three-movement finale work – Dormant, Exploding Syndrome, Ash Cloud – explores unexpected life eruptions with an expanded 10-dancer cast. Using the inspirations for Dormant, Karin aims to raise awareness for the Ben Towne Foundation and Seattle’s revolutionary childhood cancer research.
“Masterful artistry with precise timing, exacting movement and a sophisticated sense of flow. ” – Cyrus Khambatta, Seattle International Dance Festival

Composer Samantha Boshnack and her B’shnorkestra (a 14-piece alternative chamber orchestra) premiere Global Concertos: an evening of new music featuring an international tour de force of soloists.
Boshnack has written five new works, each showcasing a guest soloist’s instrument and tradition: Thione Diop – West African talking drum, Christos Govetas – Greek clarinet, Srivani Jade – North Indian vocals, Julio Jauregui – Latin American piano and Thomas Marriott – American jazz trumpet. In Global Concertos each artist brings their individual voice to the B’shnorkestra to create a new “all world” sound.
Global Concertos was made possible, in part by funding from New Music USA, 4Culture and Seattle Office of Arts and Culture.
In January 2015, the Sam Boshnack Quintet appeared on Art Zone with Nancy Guppy take a watch –
